Hank Johnson: Could Guam Tip Over?

If this happened yesterday (April Fool’s Day), I would have thought it was a joke… Unfortunately for Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA), this happened last Thursday! It seems he is the joke, not what he was saying. After expressing concern that Guam could capsize, he went on to compare ignoring this threat to the dire situation we find ourselves in with manbearpig! Oh, sorry, I meant Global Warming.

See below to watch Representative Johnson query Navy Admiral Robert Willard (head of the Pacific Fleet) about the risk of Guam tipping over from the addition of 8000 Marines. He went into fairly good detail, surmising that the small size of the island along with its wide girth would add to the threat of it falling over into the ocean. Perhaps we shouldn’t ignore Johnson’s concerns, maybe it is possible that 8000 additional Marines performing jumping jacks may cause earthquakes like we’ve never seen.

I’ve had a couple of my left-wing readers email me asking why I don’t talk about it (BTW, don’t be afraid to use the comments section and let everyone hear your opinions). Honestly, I really was ignoring the whole idiots inciting violence story. The last thing these morons need is more publicity. But, I noticed that Rush Limbaugh’s show was flooded with coverage of it, and I took a look at MSNBC (while trying to hold my dinner down) and it seemed they didn’t have any other stories to cover. I suppose that means I should put my $0.02 on it lest someone say I’m dodging a huge story (which I still say it isn’t).

I’ll start by pointing out that anyone who thinks only idiotic people from the right make threats is insane. Let’s just start by looking at the pundits. It’s bad enough that right-wing pundits receive threats almost daily (I’ve got my share as well). It’s even worse that left-wing pundits themselves make statements that are borderline threats.

Now for those of you misinformed enough to believe that suggestions of violence only comes from right-wing idiots, here’s some of the latest examples of violence from left-wing idiots

Daylight Stupidity Time

I just realized, it’s that time of year… It’s time to cut an inch off our blankets and sew it to the other end so it is longer… That’s right, it’s time for Daylight Saving Time! The most futile and pointless of activities we are forced to do twice a year in order to save our precious supply of whale oil. But we also get the side benefits of increased traffic accidents, increased residential energy usage, and plenty of issues for kids. Oh, I can’t wait, this is so worth it

Daylight Saving Time This Weekend

OK, this is a mostly offtopic rant, but by God I feel like ranting about it. I’m finally starting to see a little daylight before I make it to the office and now it’s going to be stolen away this week by this moronic Daylight Saving Time nonsense. Benjamin Franklin (you know, the guy who said “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”) rolls in his grave laughing at all of us twice a year. He presented the idea of saving candle wax as a joke, to poke fun at those who thought daylight should revolve around them. Now we are the epitome of stupidity in observing this horrid ritual.

The best comparison I’ve heard about daylight saving time is that it’s like cutting a foot off one end of your blanket and sewing it to the other end to make it longer. Sorry, moving the clocks back and forth like a bunch of mindless ninnies doesn’t give you an extra hour of daylight. Like most things political, this may be good for some people but it is certainly bad for others. Being one of those affected negatively, it is a sore spot for me.

As far as energy savings, I can tell you that my personal experience is that I use more energy because of DST. I need lights in the morning when getting ready for work much longer into the year. The light switch becomes a replacement for the window shade. I need air conditioning an hour more in the afternoon and evening since I now get home an hour earlier (during the hot part of the day). My office is climate controlled 24/7, so it’s yet another net loss in energy savings. This is backed up by studies in Indiana (who recently moved to DST) that show a net loss of energy savings overall by the switch to DST.

With safety, studies show a significant increase in traffic fatalities (6.6%) when we adjust to rising at an earlier time, but an insignificant decrease (1.5%) when we switch the clocks back. Simply put, DST costs lives.

When I lived in Indiana I heard over and over “we need to join the rest of the world and do DST”. A quick look at DST observance dates around the world shows that the countries that choose to observe DST do so on varying dates. If we change on a different date than another country we actually change our relative times 4 times throughout the year. If one of us does not observe DST, we only change relative times 2 times through the year. If neither of us observe DST we never change relative times. Is your head spinning yet? Yes, DST does not simplify time coordination with other countries. Don’t buy the tired line that “only backward countries don’t observe DST.” Japan, China, and India are not technologically backward and they do not observe DST.

Needless to say, I don’t care for DST. I get no benefit from it, and a majority of the people I talk to dislike it. I know some of you love staying out till 10PM or later playing baseball (or in some cases mowing your lawn while my kids try to sleep), but some of us find the negatives to be much heavier than any positives. Personally, I’d be happy compromising and moving the clocks 30 minutes permenantly. Unfortunately, until someone in Government grows a brain and gets it done we’ll have to continue to let Benjamin Franklin laugh at our expense.

The Amazing Expectations for Obama

There are clearly uneducated and uninformed people out there in the world. No, they’re not limited to just the Obama faithful, but I had to post these.

The first is a woman who seems to have fallen on some tough times. I feel for her and hope her condition improves, however she seems to be hoping that Obama was planning an Oprah moment.

This next clip is of a gentleman who has not managed to move up from his McDonald’s job while attending college. Hats off to him for working there for over four years, but he is a bit confused if he thinks Obama’s job is to force companies to give increased benefits based on years of service.

It just reminds me of the lady who swooned over Obama during the election, feeling she would never have to worry about paying for her mortgage ever again.

The expectations of these people are amazing. And to his credit, Obama handled the strange questions fairly well. I hope that the general population is more informed than this and realize that it is personal effort, not governmental effort, that will move them to the place they want to be in life. What ever happened to “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”?

Schumer: Americans Don’t Care About Pork

McCain Yard Sign Vandal Gets Shocked by Booby Trap

A My Fox Dallas report details the adventures of a Chapel Hill, North Carolina man that was tired of having his McCain yard signs stolen and replaced with Obama signs. The man, Shawn Turschak, an electrical engineer, wired his sign up an a power supply from an electrical pet fence. He set up a camera in a nearby tree and kept surveillance.

The camera caught a rather short individual approaching his sign with an Obama sign. The youngster touched the sign and quickly ran off the way he came. Shortly afterward, a neighbor came to the house complaining that his 9-year old son had been electrocuted.

Captain James Nida of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department says he doesn’t plan to file charges.

Palin Effigy in California Finally Comes Down

The owners of a West Hollywood home finally took down the effigy of Palin hanging by a noose that RWNJ reported on earlier. According to this CBS2 report, neighbors came and obscured the mannequin with a sheet.

Later that evening, some protesters arrived with an SUV and an effigy of their own. They strung up a mannequin labeled “Chad” (after the homeowner, Chad Morrissette) in a noose. It was apparently effective as shortly afterward, the Palin mannequin came down. A video is avalable at the CBS2 report.

Mass State Senator Wilkerson Busted Taking Bribes

A Massachusetts state senator, Democrat Dianne Wilkerson, was arrested on charges of extortion as a public official and theft of honest services as a state senator. According to an Associated Press article, she was caught on video accepting cash from some undercover agents and even stuffing some of the money into her bra. It appears she took the cash in exchange for her assistance in helping a developer obtain a liquor license.

Wilkerson did not enter a plea, but faces a total of 40 years in prison and $500,000 in fines. She had held the seat since 1993 but lost in a close primary race. She was attempting to keep her position through a write-in and sticker campaign. Allegedly, the illegal money was going to be used to help fund a primary recount that would cost $70,000.

McCain Campaign Workers Attacked With Mace

Yet another dose of stupidity to report today. This time from Galax, VA. According to the Galax Gazette, Daniel Cason Meinecke, 29, and Cara Annis Hindman, 26, entered the Republican headquarters in Galax and asked for Obama yard signs. When Galax Republican Chairman Mike Stevens told them to go up the street to the Democrat headquarters, the couple suggested that the Republican party was stealing signs and storing them at the headquarters.

The situation escalated and Mr. Meinecke started using some choice words, which prompted Mr. Stevens to ask him to leave. Long story short, Stevens escorted the couple out and Ms. Hindman sprayed him and another volunteer with mace. She then sprayed mace inside the headquarters. Both Meinecke and Hindman are under arrest.

We continue to further divide America with this sort of thing. It’s absolutely stupid!

Skinheads Arrested in Obama Assassination Plot

According to The Smoking Gun, two skinheads were arrested for plotting a killing spree. Apparently, Daniel Cowart, 20 and Paul Schlesselman, 18, are white supremacists. They planned to target a mostly African-American school, then go state to state in an effort to rob and kill people. The final act was to be an assassination attempt on Obama consisting of driving their vehicle towards Obama while firing at him out of the windows.

To top things off, they were planning on wearing white tuxedoes and top hats. Today must be the day of hatred and idiocy since it seems to be the main things I’m finding to post about today. Thankfully, ATF has these two in custody under three federal felony charges.

Vandals Attack McCain Supporters’ Homes in Northern VA

Just further proof that partisan politics has gotten way out of hand… Redstate.com has posted some photos of a vandal attack on the homes of McCain supporters in Northern Virginia. It’s a shame that one cannot express their political views without risk to their property or even personal safety.

The photos are marked copyrighted, so I’m only going to post the link. Those who might take offense at foul language might not want to click, the vandals were obviously trying to be vile. Pictures are here on flickr.

Volunteer Made Up Story About Mutiliation

Yesterday, a woman claimed that she was robbed and mutilated after using an ATM in Pittsburgh. KDKA is reporting that the woman had inconsistencies in her story and eventually admitted to making the story up. In a way, this is a good thing (that someone didn’t actually perpetrate this act)… in another, it’s absolutely disgusting that the woman, 20-year-old Ashley Todd, made this story up.

Acts like this are what feed blind partisanship. It does not further anyone’s campaign, and does not move forward the political discussion.

The woman will face charges. Police have not yet disclosed what the charges will be.

McCain Volunteer Mutilated in Pittsburgh

A 20-year-old woman was robbed outside an ATM last night in Pittsburgh. The woman, a McCain volunteer from Texas, says she had just withdrawn money from an ATM. The robber, reported as a dark-skinned black male, 6′ 4″ and 200 pounds, approached the woman with a knife and took $60 from her.

She retreated to her car, which has McCain stickers on it and the man became agitated. He punched her in the back of the head, kicked her, pushed her to the ground, and carved the letter ’B’ into her face. Unfortunately, the attack happened outside of the view of the ATM camera.
