The Las Angeles Times is reporting that two Academy members, Roger L. Simon and Lionel Chetwynd, are asking the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recall the Oscar that Al Gore won in 2007 for “An Inconvenient Truth”. Of course, there is no way that such a demand will result in any action in the liberal world that is Hollywood, but it is humorous to see. Simon and Chetwynd are Conservatives in Hollywood, something that is much more endangered than polar bears

Climate Bill Mistake Could Cost Dems

As has hit the news, the Cap and Trade bill (also known as Waxman-Markey) passed the house 219-212. Several representatives changed their minds on the bill allowin the narrow passage. Some, such as Debbie Halverson (D-IL), were recorded saying they wouldn’t vote for the bill, but then proceeded to vote for it anyway.

It is simply amazing to see how many representatives actually voted for this bill (including 8 Republicans). We are seeing more people step forward to question global warming (including someone in the EPA who was apparently silenced by Obama’s agenda). Despite this, the house wants to push forward with a bill that will undoubtedly hurt the economy and burden families with imbedded “green taxes”. An MIT Study put the cost to each American family at $3900/year.

Not only is the link of carbon dioxide to global temperatures in question, our economy is struggling. We have unemployment rates approaching 10% and now we’re looking to pass a bill that will cost jobs and add burden to our families. This leaves an opening for the Republicans to step up and be a voice of reason. The question is, will they step up to the plate?

According to The Nation, the U.S. Government is going to give $8 billion this year to the nation’s 10 largest paper companies. The reason is an odd bit of green legislation that gives a 50 cent a gallon tax credit for using fuel mixtures that are a combination of taxable fuels (such as diesel) with alternative fuels.

The process of making paper involves placing wood into a chemical mixture to separate out the cellulose fibers. The leftover material forms what is termed black liquor and it is a good fuel due to its large carbon content. Paper companies use black liquor to produce the heat and energy they need to manufacture paper.

They discovered that they can take advantage of this tax credit by simply adding diesel fuel to the mixture. It is totally unnecessary and far from green, but it allows them to make a handsome profit off of the tax credit. The attempt to engineer green behaviour has actually resulted in the exact opposite. It is amazing how every year our tax code continues to get more complex yet continues to get less and less effective.

Scientists Claim Earth Climate Change is Natural

WISN (ABC-Milwaukee) is reporting that scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee used a synchronized chaos math application and applied it to climate data over the past 100 years. They have discovered that the air and ocean systems of Earth go through periodic periods of synchronization and de-synchronization. A shift in the climate occurs each time the systems lose synchronization. They are able to explain the various heating and cooling cycles of the past century using this technique.

Their research team found that the warming trend of the past 30 years has stopped and temperatures have actually leveled off since 2001. This fits their theory as the Earth is currently showing the signs of system synchronization. They expect that temperatures will remain steady or even cool for the next couple of decades, until another de-synchronization occurs.

Dr. Anastasios Tsonis brings up a key point in the whole matter. ”But if we don’t understand what is natural, I don’t think we can say much about what the humans are doing. So our interest is to understand — first the natural variability of climate — and then take it from there.” A scientist that uses common-sense… very impressive!

He went on to say, “So we were very excited when we realized a lot of changes in the past century from warmer to cooler and then back to warmer were all natural.” Perhaps man isn’t the main driver of climate change.

Pelosi Snowed Out of Global Warming Rally

Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) flight (not sure if it was commercial or private) was delayed and she was unable to attend the Global Warming Rally in Washington D.C. due to a blizzard that hit the D.C. area Sunday night.

House Select Energy Independence and Global Warming Chairman Edward Markey (D-MA) was also forced to cancel his appearance due to the weather.

I honestly wonder why they don’t schedule these rallies for summertime for some dramatic impact.

Sensor Issues Causing Underestimation of Sea Ice

The National Snow and Ice Data Center is one of the key organizations in tracking sea ice coverage. Yes, this is the same organization that thought an ice-free polar region was possible by September of 2008. It appears that they have had sensor issues that have caused them to incorrectly report some sea areas ice-free when they were actually ice-covered. They have reported that they have under-reported ice coverage by 500,000 square kilometers. NSIDC has removed their invalid data and are searching for other data sets to find accurate information.

Sea ice is currently tracking higher than the previous 4 years.

Biofuels Actually Increase CO2

Let me preface this by saying that I don’t buy into AGW theory, but I know some of my readers do and may find this interesting…

AFP has an article stating that biofuels are actually increasing the rate of CO2 emissions. According to the article, a good portion of the land used to grow crops used for biofuels are newly cut rainforests or disturbed forests. The stored CO2 that is released by the cutting of these forests will take 40 to 120 years to break even in a high-yield crop (such as sugar). Worse yet, a low-yield crop (such as corn or soybeans) will require 300 to 1500 years to break even.

Throw in that biofuels raise food prices as well as the negative energy return of using them, and you have to question using crop-based biofuels if your movitvation is to reduce CO2.

Nevermind, October is Not Hottest on Record

Yet another question mark has been raised regarding the monitoring of global temperature. Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) of NASA announced about a week ago that October was the hottest on record. Oddly enough, this was the same month that Tibet experienced its worst snowstorm ever, London has its first October snow in 70 years, and large parts of the US have record cold and snowfall (including 115 record cold temperatures and 63 new snowfall records). The US actually had the 70th warmest October in the past 114 years.

GISS maps showed that a large part of Russia was 10 degrees higher than normal. This would explain the increase in global temperature except for the fact that the numbers were apparently from September and not October. GISS quickly revised its figures and claimed to have found an area of the Arctic that was unusually hot (yes, the same Arctic that has recovered from the extreme summer melt so well that it has 31.3% more sea ice than last year and the largest growth ever recorded).

GISS has resorted to some fingerpointing that throws some doubt on the main source of data that Global Warming alarmists such as the IPCC use as their main source of evidence. Dr. James Hansen has been forced to revise his numbers in the past, including having to admit that the warmest decade in the 20th century was actually the 1930’s and not the 1990’s as he previously claimed.

The carbon credits scheme is sure to be in the works with Obama and the Democrats soon to take control. Such a ploy for wealth redistribution should be based in fact and not speculation based on invalid statistics. Errors such as this should raise red flags and cause investigations, not be ignored as seems to happen these days with the whole global warming topic.

Least Active Tropical Weather in Last 30 Years

Florida State University released a study showing that the past 24 months tropical cyclone activity in the northern hemisphere is the most inactive in the past 30 years. 2007 was the least active year since 1977, and the 4th slowest year since 1958.

Some are starting to reconsider the notion that global warming is intensifying hurricanes. One thing is clear, climate and hurricanes are complex and we still have much to learn before we can leap to conclusions.

Obama: Constitution Reflects Fundamental Flaw of America, Wealth Should be Redistributed

This is from a 2001 Chicago Public Radio interview. Obama is saying outright that wealth should be redistributed. Unfortunately, the more and more I hear from former interviews, the more I think he’s more of a Socialist than a Democrat (please realize that I’m saying that as a definition of his views, not an inflammatory slur statement).

I’m sorry, but redistribution of wealth should not be a function of a Capitalist country. Obama’s demeanor in the interview is very matter-of-fact. He has no doubt in his voice that redistribution of wealth should be done. I must admit that this is even more frightening than his comments to Joe the Plumber.

On the plus side, he did say that such changes should be made legislatively and not through the courts. Not very reassuring to me, but at least it’s something positive.

Where’d the Global Warming Go?

The National Post put up an article pointing out that the warming over the past 30 years has disappeared in the past 3 years. Evidence continues to mount that things such as the sun (sunspots in particular) and the ocean are what affect the climate, not manmade global emissions.

The cause for alarm in global warming that I’ve seen over and over again is the rapid increase in global temperatures. We now have a decrease that is 10 times more rapid. Shouldn’t we be 10 times as alarmed that global temperature is declining?

The climate has been changing since the start of this planet. Yes, the Medieval Warming Period did really exist. And no, they weren’t driving SUV’s around back then. There are more powerful things in this universe than man.

Perhaps this is the time for more analysis into climate change. Real analysis, not analysis based on speculation and faulty assumptions. The science has been lost to the politics. “We must act now” has replaced the scientific method. While one expert says the warming won’t stop, another says there is a potential of a 30 year cooling period. When someone starts yelling that the debate is over, you know it isn’t.
