The National Snow and Ice Data Center is one of the key organizations in tracking sea ice coverage. Yes, this is the same organization that thought an ice-free polar region was possible by September of 2008. It appears that they have had sensor issues that have caused them to incorrectly report some sea areas ice-free when they were actually ice-covered. They have reported that they have under-reported ice coverage by 500,000 square kilometers. NSIDC has removed their invalid data and are searching for other data sets to find accurate information.
Sea ice is currently tracking higher than the previous 4 years.

Thank you, and thanks for using my photo.
It looks, however, that this site is “for profit”, given the amount of advertising. If that is the case, my license prohibits commercial use without prior negotiation of a publishing rights fee.
I always include an attribution for every photo (in the image title/mouseover) as well as a link to the original work unless the author requests otherwise. I’m more than happy to remove the original attribution and adjust to what you have requested.
I will remove any photo that the original author requests I remove regardless of their reason (I have yet to have anyone request it though). This is a personal blog and not a for profit venture. The advertising on the site doesn’t come close to covering even the hosting expense. If I ever pulled a profit I’d either cut back on ads or use a different license of photos. Profit has never been a goal of this site.
I am a huge fan of Flickr’s fantastic photographers (I have several of my own photos out there being used through the CC license on blogs similar to this one) and it is my hope that the photos that I add to the site are able to promote the photographer’s talents and hopefully drive some traffic over to them so they can share their excellent work. All-in-all it is a great way to both add some color here as well as expose the photographer’s work to a larger audience. I can only assume you had a decent amount of traffic from the exposure from this post since you took notice. It’s great to know that I’m able to assist in promoting photographers such as yourself. Thanks for visiting!
Thanks for your courtesy and regard for ethics !
Much appreciated. Sorry I didn’t notice the “mouse over”, but thanks for the change.
