Biofuels Actually Increase CO2

Let me preface this by saying that I don’t buy into AGW theory, but I know some of my readers do and may find this interesting…

AFP has an article stating that biofuels are actually increasing the rate of CO2 emissions.  According to the article, a good portion of the land used to grow crops used for biofuels are newly cut rainforests or disturbed forests.  The stored CO2 that is released by the cutting of these forests will take 40 to 120 years to break even in a high-yield crop (such as sugar).  Worse yet, a low-yield crop (such as corn or soybeans) will require 300 to 1500 years to break even.

Throw in that biofuels raise food prices as well as the negative energy return of using them, and you have to question using crop-based biofuels if your movitvation is to reduce CO2.

Wired Magazine did an artcle on this:

Another counterintuitive item you never read about is that coal fired power plants release more radioactivity than nuclear plants and create more hazardous waste.

Being green is harder than people think and a lot that feels good or seems good, is not.
